No Hero Of Mine

“We bumped them off on the ship, and we bumped them off as they were swimming in the water.”(A younger Yitzchak Rabin in his capacity as Ambassador to the U.S. recalls the Altalena Affair).

On Wednesday, the supposedly “right-wing” Likud government will memorialize Yizchak Rabin, on the 19th anniversary of his assassination. Nineteen years of continuous Arab terror, and Israel’s leaders have learned nothing from Rabin’s criminal pact with Arafat. Netanyahu will continue to undermine his credibility as he waxes poetically with his eloquent speaking voice about Rabin’s mythical legacy. And Netanyahu, who was elected several times with a mandate to end Oslo, will speak of his own personal commitment to continuing the “Peace Process.” This will occur while the Arabs of Jerusalem continue to maim and murder Jews. Whole sections of Jerusalem, including our holy Har Habayit, remain Judenrein. Our leaders refuse to crush Arab terror because they cannot face the unpleasant truth: There are no Arab moderates. Even those Arabs who actually work for Jews (insane as it is to hire them) still want to kill us.
What Rabin called a peace treaty, Arafat called a phased plan of destruction. Rabin and Peres heard peace while Arafat thundered “Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!” for the cameras in Ramallah. They shoved this illegal crime, a crime no less than treason, down the throats of the Jewish people, and those who protested peacefully had their bones broken open by the henchmen of the left. Neither the insane escalation of Arab suicide bombings that stole so many Jewish lives, nor the shootings on the roads and the kidnappings changed a thing. To oppose Oslo was to be a right-wing extremist. And when Rabin was killed, the kipah became a symbol to destroy. It didn’t help that many loyalist religious Jews devoured the bait and publicly pounded their breasts on the national scene.
Mahmoud Abbas is no different than Arafat when it comes to his Jew hatred. While he appears more respectable than Arafat (who always looked like he rolled around in the mud from whence he came) Abbas is as diseased a soul as the former. After all, this is the same man who earned his doctorate in “Holocaust Denial.” And so it comes as no surprise when one reads that Fatah recently celebrated the Arab fiend who murdered a Jewish baby with his car. Fatah=PLO=PA. All synonyms for the same murderous organization of Arab butchers.
It is an annual perversion, this season of Rabin, which has become a profane festival to perpetuate Jewish weakness and perpetuate the policies of appeasement. It is a time for the propagandists of the Ministry of (Mis)Education to ensure the continuation of Rabin’s blood charter with the PLO by corrupting the minds and souls of our youth. In the past, the worst elements of the Left used the occasion to incite hatred against religious Jews and opponents of Oslo. And so, the sin of vivisecting Eretz Yisroel and handing its limbs over to murderous goyim drags on; The sacrifice of Jewish lives on the altar of world opinion.
Many religious government schools are clueless about how to handle this government mandated day of ceremony and remembrance. The reactions range from avoiding the topic, making a lame effort to satisfy the government requirement, or for the real die hard loyalists, by actually following through with the government program. And there is no way to sanitize the day, or to remove the political/ideological thrust of the day. At the core, it is a day of leftist indoctrination. Needless to say, I will be keeping my children home from school that day, since hell will freeze over before I allow Shimon Peres to indoctrinate my kids about anything.
While I don’t celebrate Rabin’s death, I shed no tears for a man who callously referred to the Jewish victims of Arab terror as “sacrifices for peace.” I will never mourn the legacy of one who shook the hand of the Arab Hitler of our time, a genuine successor to the Mufti’s genocidal plans. And lest one forget history (an easy thing in Israel’s Leftist education system), Oslo was not the beginning of Rabin’s crimes against the Jewish people. Long before he shook hands with the PLO butcher, Rabin was responsible for murdering Jews.
Remember The Altalena!
Leftists prattle about “right wing incitement and extremism,” yet consistently omit or misrepresent the Left’s infamous assault on the Irgun ship, the S.S. Altalena. A horrible stain on the Left’s head, when a young Rabin played a key role in the murder of 16 heroic Jews. Ben-Gurion saw an opportunity to spill Irgun blood and murder Begin, and the upstart Rabin assisted him. In his powerful work, “The First Tithe,” Lechi ideaologician Dr. Israel Eldad reflects on the Palmach celebration on the day the Altalena was sunk and the slaughter of Jews:
“And where is the great artist who will paint Ben Gurion’s face as he gave the order, and the face of Yitzchak Sadeh and the face of Galili and the face of the man who fired the artillery and the faces of the Palmach men and women who danced and sang in the cars returning from the slaughter, as they drove down to Ben Yehuda and Allenby streets in Tel Aviv.” (pg. 389)
Years later, Leah Rabin shared her thoughts on the Altalena atrocity, in her biography of her husband entitled, “Rabin. Our Life, His Legacy.” She gave the Altalena scant treatment, and she summarized her bias by describing the Palmach assault on the ship in the context of a morally equivalent and grotesque phrase: “A powerful gun battle followed.” (pg. 81) Of course, one can understand such dishonesty and moral sickness when one reads the praise she heaps on Yasser Arafat. “But it was during this visit to our home that I truly discovered the warm and authentic side to this human being behind the political facade.” (pg. 29)
Leah Rabin’s words of praise for one of the most monstrous enemies of Am Yisroel. The Arab Hitler.
Rabbi Binyamin Kahane, (who, along with his wife, was murdered Al Kiddush Hashem by Arabs) reflected on Rabin in his classic essay, “On Assassinations and Attempted Assassinations” (translated by Lenny Goldberg).
“And finally, according to the non-Jewish calendar, (which perhaps has no significance for us anyway), Yizchak Rabin was killed exactly five years after my father. How ironic. Do you remember the reaction of the left when my father was murdered? These self-righteous hypocrites danced on his blood. The Israeli Government officially ignored it. It was pleased to see the troublemaker go.
My father’s murder was also two years after the same Likud-Labor government, out of fear that he would cop seats from them, banned my father from running for Knesset. Such an act disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of Jews, negating from them their basic democratic right to vote. It closed the door in the face of the most excitable and enthusiastic sector of the population, and it left them little choice. Did it not enter their Bolshevik minds that one out of all these people MIGHT do something out of desperation when no other alternative was left to?
In one of his books, my father writes about the first murder attempt against him. The year was 1976, and the Shin Bet warned him to stop his actions, and if not, they would “take care of him.” My father did not stop, and on the17th of Tamuz, 1976, there was an attempt to assassinate him. Only a miracle saved him. Who was Prime Minister then? You got it. Yitzchak Rabin.”
Rabin’s Legacy
Thanks to Yitzchak Rabin and Peres, our tiny country is under siege within and without. Rabin sanitized the PLO, and every self-respecting leftist today “knows” that the PA is comprised of moderates. Moderates who will gun you down as fast as any ISIS barbarian. Moderates who are armed to the teeth with powerful weapons and the ability to use them. While Hamas occupies Gaza and fires rockets upon the length and width of our tiny besieged country, Hezbollah dominates the northern fight. And lest we forgot, the roving Islamic psychopaths of ISIS are heading our way. We are much weaker than before Oslo, and there were plenty of problems beforehand, such as the ticking time bomb of Arab demography. Today, all mainstream politicians encourage, in one form or another, the Oslo march to the graveyard.
The latest virus of Arab violence in Jerusalem is another indication of what the Arabs within Israel have in store for us. Last week, an Arab beast attempted to murder Rabbi Yehudah Glick, a prominent advocate for Jewish prayer rights on Har Habayit. Previously, this Arab worked in a restaurant in the Begin Center. The latest act of Arab terror in what has become a genuine intifada within Jerusalem. Only the blind would deny that the Arabs of Jerusalem are showing their true faces. A Jew signs his own death warrant if he enters many Arab sections of Jerusalem. For those who haven’t yet learned, these latest Arab riots destroy the myth of the moderate “Israeli-Arab,” a nonsensical term made up by the Left since they want to believe in the myth of moderate Arabs within Israel. We are witnessing an Arab war in Jerusalem against Jews. “An uprising” as the post-zionist left would prefer to call it. The same as the “Arab uprisings” of the 20′s and 30′s, where marauding Arabs butchered and mutilated hundreds of Jews.
Netanyahu and his band of incompetents keep rehashing the same tired and false mantras. “We will come down strong against terror.” “We will not tolerate terror.” They are liars. They have tolerated it, and they will continue to do so, since the only alternative would be to gun down Arab mobs every day. And how would that look in the western media? What would the State Department say? A normal Jew responds with the retort, “the hell with them,” but normal Jews do not currently run the eternally perplexed Israeli government. So we are forced to see the repugnant images of Israeli police speeding away from rioting Arabs. Instead of gunning them down like rabid beasts, they flee like frightened prey. Those who want to damn the anti-semites of the world for their obvious bias against Jews, should open their eyes to the reality within our own leadership. If the State Department doesn’t consider Arab “youth” who hurl stones at Jewish heads to be terrorists, and they don’t, then neither do our clueless leaders.
Rabin’s Authentic Legacy
In his youth, Rabin participated in the murder of heroic Jews. His career took off like a rocket because he was a “yes man” when Ben-Gurion wanted Begin and the Irgun eliminated. As an older man, Rabin shook hands with the devil and signed Israel’s death warrant on the lawn of the White House. In the name of “peace” he parceled Israel up as if it was his own private real estate and armed Arafat and his Amalekite fiends. Thousands of slaughtered and maimed Jews courtesy of his insanity. All in the name of peace.
Rabin betrayed the Jewish people. Today he is a god in the eyes of the left. And still they haven’t learned; nor have their allegedly “right-wing” counterparts of the Likud, who continue to march along to the beat of of Rabin’s death march. Rabin is their modern day Baal, and they are the priests.
Open your eyes, deluded Jews of the Left. Oslo was a sin against The Almighty and the Jewish people. If one chooses to remember Rabin, he should know the authentic story of Rabin’s life. Not the Rabin mythos that turned him into a god for the Godless. Rabin is no hero. Not for any self-respecting G-d-fearing Jew who doesn’t venerate the legacy of Mapai. Only clueless Jews revere the memory of one who brought death and misery to the Jews of the Altalena and the Jewish people with Oslo. Thanks to Rabin, Peres, Beilin and the rest of the “mixed multitude,” the PLO is armed and waiting right at our doorstep. Worse still, the Left deem them to be moderates. I shed no tears for Rabin. I shed tears for the victims of Oslo past, present, and future. And I scream for the blood of the Arabs who seek to exterminate us.

A Knife In The Heart: More Jews Murdered!

David Raziel of blessed memory.
So many important things to say. The necessary redundant statements that I and others have stated countless times before. And yet, I am unable to do so. I have no energy for poetics, nor any desire to be creative at this tragic moment. Today we mourn the murdered kedoshim, Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin (may G-d avenge their blood!) who were slaughtered  by Arabs (yemach shmam v'zichram) last night in front of their four children.

We enter Shabbat with more tears for our murdered brothers and sisters. Heart-wrenching sobs for orphaned Jewish children who will never know normalcy. Screams to the Heavens for the lunatic spectacle of a 9 year old reciting Kaddish for both his parents. When the tears dry, their blood will still scream out for vengeance. After the Jewish heart has cried its last drop, the Jewish heart needs to cultivate and kindle a different emotion. Rage. At the end of the day, we need to gird ourselves with rage and a desire to see evil annihilated.

Netanyahu has Jewish blood on his hands. No doubt, he and Yaalon will respond to this horror with more KGB/Shabak tactics against Jews, on the pretext of stopping Jews from retaliating against Arabs. Once again, there will be neither evidence, charges, or trial as Jews are imprisoned for indefinite periods of time, courtesy of the notorious abuses of "Administrative Detention."

The great Irgun leader, David Raziel acted so unlike Netanyahu when Arabs murdered Jews. Bibi fancies himself a successor to the early great Zionist leaders who reacted with collective, collateral damage against the enemy, when they slaughtered Jews as a pack of hyenas ravage a gazelle. When Nazis desire your extermination, you don't nitpick and decide which Germans deserve to get it tenfold. The Arabs are today's Nazis. While Jews are gutted, Bibi gives eloquent speeches. In truth, he spits upon Raziel's legacy.

B'dam Va'esh. Blood and fire! David Raziel and other great leaders of Lechi and the Irgun responded to Arab terror with unrelenting violence, because that is the true language of the Arabs. Not the sanitized surgical violence of today's eunuchs in government, but the inferno of vengeance of those who had enough of Jewish funerals and the wailing of survivors. It's time to fight wars the way the Torah mandates, not the way the U.N. or Obama would have us fight them. The Arabs neither appreciate nor fear the olive branch of  havlaga (self-restraint) or the wilting reed of hasbara (public relations).

On the day when our sick diseased leadership falls and normal people seize the reigns, I humbly submit my conscription to an army committed to truly fighting these savages. To fight the way Jewish wars are meant to be fought. In truth, this is why I made aliyah. To fight for Eretz Yisroel, not merely to live in the land. Please Hashem, give us the strength and fortitude to obliterate these savages.

May Hashem comfort and protect the children of these murdered kedoshim. And may we soon see total vengeance for Arab barbarism.

Shabbat Shalom.

Cory Booker: Portrait of a Fraud

Featured in "The Jewish Press" on September 17, 2015: http://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/columns/fuchs-focus/senator-corey-booker-portrait-of-a-fraud/2015/09/17/

“And as one Democrat after another, one conga line of Democrat after another supports this surrender, it’s clear that the Democrats no longer represent the party of Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy. It’s now the Democrat party of Bill Ayres and Barack Obama. And the Democrat party will have the blood on its hand as a result of this deal for the rest of time.” –Excerpt of speech delivered Wednesday by conservative radio host Mark Levin, at a rally in front of the U.S. Capital. (Breibart)

In my last article, I spoke about Judaism’s position regarding the dangers of trusting men, even seemingly decent men. Liberal Jews, and those Jews who befriended and peddled New Jersey Senator Cory Booker around in Jewish circles now have another contemporary example to highlight this point. Cory Booker, that supposed friend of Israel, has exposed himself. Far from the image of strength and bipartisan decency he always sought to present, we now see him for who he truly is. Beneath the veneer of confidence and capability, Booker is a weak man, incapable of standing firm on principles. Another democrat hack who lacked courage to oppose Obama’s treasonous Iran “deal/treaty” which threatens the U.S. and presents an existential danger to Israel. I have a very different notion of friendship.

And let’s not mince words. The looming “deal” with Iran really is THAT bad. As I’ve noted before, Neville Chamberlain was a weak man. Obama is an evil one. He wants a weakened United States. He wants nuclear parity, even among the Arab/Islamic dictatorships that litter the Middle East. This is the stuff of treason. And let us not forget the numerous side-deals with Iran that until today have not been released as mandated by law to the public. That these individuals in Senate could blindly support Obama without full disclosure is terrifying, and it speaks volumes about the kind of people who pursue power in America.

Iran has the blood of so many Americans on their hands, and they continue to commit and fund terror. Even after this "deal" they boast that Israel’s destruction is imminent, and yet somehow Cory Booker tries to justify his support for such a deal, which will remove sanctions and enrich them economically and militarily, and eventually guarantee them nuclear capability. Booker is now desperate to cozy up to his liberal Jewish supporters who gave him so much money during the 2014 congressional elections, and are now stunned by his betrayal. To their credit, some Jews have indicated that they have no interest in meeting him. Others expressed a desire to give him a piece of their mind. The former is the more dignified approach since it adequately conveys one’s disgust, and avoids the inevitable process where he will flatter and appease them. Many Jews will eat right out of his hand and welcome him back into the fold. Many will forgive him and chalk it up to a different perspective, while re-inviting him into the mispachah.

I’m not accusing Booker of being an anti-Semite. He seems a decent man, which leaves us with no alternative but to conclude that he is foolish, small-minded, self-serving, naïve, and weak. The alternative is the charge of antisemitism, which I don’t believe is appropriate in his case. Cowardly and foolish is the only logical explanation. And let’s be honest, only a courageous liberal black democrat could ever oppose Obama on this issue, since the immediate result of such a transgression is to be stripped of your street credentials with the black community.

Even in the absence of his latest folly, Cory Booker was just another liberal black politician who failed the black community, because he has never been able to extricate himself from the pagan cult of Obama worship that allowed a racist, radical, Jew-hating community activist to twice become President of the United States. At the end of the day he is another carbon copy politician who has fallen in line with the fraudulent narrative that democrats are interested in helping the black community. Yet spouting liberal talking points, and standing firm with the party of past segregation, and contemporary liberal racism isn’t brave and cutting edge. It reflects the parable of Proverbs, where the dog returns to his vomit.

Those individuals who should be emulated by the black community are few in number. Individuals such as Allen West, Dr. Ben Carson, and the straight shooting Sherriff Clarke represent true men of courage, wisdom, and dignity who could help put the dysfunctional black community back in line. Tough love. Yet at the end of the day, the liberals always go with the race-baiters, the demagogues, and in a few instances with the more innocuous misguided decent men like Cory Booker, who remains a clueless progressive married to a failed liberal agenda.

No friend of ours would ever stand with Obama and the genocidal Iranian mullahs who are hell bent on destroying Israel and the Jewish people. Booker and his liberal quisling friends will go down in the annals of history as weak, little people who aided one tyrant to strengthen the Ayatollah, and bring death to the Jewish people. Cory Booker is no friend of the Jewish people. I implore the reader to call him out, shame him, and publicize his betrayal. He and all the rest of the contemporary Neville Chamberlains of the U.S. Senate. They are traitors. And they will have blood on their hands.

Cory Booker will say nice things about Jews, Judaism, and Israel, when you throw Jewish money at him. Until you ask him to stand with you against Obama’s treason against a genocidal Iran. Then he will stammer and stutter and step into line, ready to goose-step with the rest of the liberal lemmings to Obama’s death march.

History will recall Obama's treason, along with the craven, myopic, goose-stepping liberal senators who joined hands with him and paved the way for a nuclear war with Iran. And lest we overlook his role, despite his "no" vote, Chuck Schumer's failure to advocate forcefully against the deal rendered his vote useless, and placed this scheming opportunist in the camp of the others. And those frauds such as Cory Booker who feigned friendship with Jews and then sided with Obama and Iran at America and Israel's expense will one day suffer for their sins.

A final message to Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu:

Take a page out of Menachem Begin’s playbook, who for all of his mistakes as Prime Minister, refused to allow Iraq to obtain nuclear capability during his watch. Because Begin truly loved Jews and was eternally haunted by the Holocaust, he wasn’t going to allow that to happen within the reach of his arm. Don’t let the Iranian Amalekites obtain the one weapon that would kill millions of Jews in Israel. You had the courage and the integrity to call out the danger to the world. That was the first time I supported you on any decision without qualifying my support. Give me another opportunity to do so. It’s time to wake up and act decisively. Now!

Reflections on the Black Pilgrimage to Uman (audio)

An annual epidemic in the form of a mass pilgrimage. Every year, thousands of Breslov chasidim abandon their families for Rosh Hashanah in order to travel to Uman. The purpose? To pray at the grave of their Rebbe. My reflections on this lunacy.

Don't Go to Uman!

Originally published in The Jewish Press: http://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/opinions/the-cult-of-uman/2014/09/12/0/

Disclaimer:My motivation behind this article is love for misguided Jews. I have no desire to needlessly upset people before the chag, but the troubling issue I raise in this article cannot be ignored. It represents the death of the Jewish mind, and every Jew who is drawn to this nonsense is another soul that has forsaken common sense and chochmah for a new age experience.

Craziness is contagious in the world of the non-thinker. Tragically, if someone in the Jewish world creates some new religious rite or practice, it doesn’t take long before the non-thinking masses get caught up in the hysteria. And then it spreads like a virus. Within a few years, it attains the status of an ancient tradition, particularly when there is money to be made.

In Israel we see this in the prevalence of miracle shrines such as Amuqah, or the infamous “wonder workers” of Jerusalem who allegedly manifest your “ayin horas” as bubbles in a pot, and then magically make them disappear. Not only does the latter ridiculous practice encroach on a myriad of prohibitions, it also takes the real but terribly distorted concept of the “evil eye,” ayin hora, (a philosophical concept relating to human psychology which chazal understand), and distorts it into a primitive spell that a shaman might cast onto a frightened native.

The modern cult of Uman is another prime example of this frightening phenomenon, where un-Jewish practices are given the status of mitzvah. I was initially going to avoid this topic, since it encroaches on the complicated halachic/hashkafic issue of visiting/praying at graves which I already addressed several weeks back in my article “Talking to the Dead.” I only reconsidered after being inundated on Facebook with more evidence of this troubling annual event. And the trip to Uman entails other problems as well.

Going To Graves
The basic issue regarding the phenomenon of Breslover chasidim traveling to Uman to pray at the grave of their deceased Rebbe relates to the obvious halachic question of the permissibility of praying at graves. As I noted before, this is a complex halachic issue that is the source of Jewish debate. What is not debated is whether praying to the dead is permitted. This act is a biblical prohibition related to necromancy. Without a doubt most of those who travel to Uman are actually praying to “Rebbe Nachman.” Some of them may actually try to convince you that they are praying there in his merit, or asking him to intercede, but their words betray their true intentions. Their motivations and expectations are such that it is clear that they have come to Uman to “speak” to Rebbe Nachman. Many of them will tell you this outright. They believe that he has the power (and indeed, that he has given his promise) to answer their prayers! These misguided Jews will tell you, that Rebbe Nachman informed his students prior to his death that he would answer the prayers of those who came to daven at his grave. “It’s all in Rav Nachman’s hands,” they explain.

On the web at breslov.com, one can find such views explaining the “custom”:
“Rebbe Nachman made a promise that no other Tzaddik in the whole of Jewish history has ever made. Taking two of his closest followers as witnesses, he said: “When my days are ended and I leave this world, I will intercede for anyone who comes to my grave, recites the Ten Psalms of the General Remedy – the Tikkun HaKlali (The 10 specific chapters in the book of Psalms are: 16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, 150. For further details, see Rabbi Nachman’s Tikkun, Breslov Research Institute, 1984.) – and gives some charity. No matter how serious his sins and transgressions, I will do everything in my power to save him and cleanse him. I will span the length and breadth of the Creation for him. By his payos I will pull him out of Hell!” (Rabbi Nachman’s Wisdom #141). “It makes no difference what he did until that day, as long as he undertakes not to return to his foolish ways from now on” (Tzaddik #122). This is avodah zarah (idol worship)!

Such views are anathema to yahadut because only Hakadosh Baruch Hu can guarantee forgiveness. Oftentimes, there is onesh, punishment, as a requirement for repentance. For some sins, one only receives atonement after death. No man on earth has the ability to make such a promise. And repentance does not come in the codified formula of simply reading specific verses of tehillim, as if they were a magical chant. (The reading of psalms as a means of drawing near to tshuvah is something entirely different, hence the popular and accepted practice of reading tehillim when the nation is in trouble.)

Unfortunately, such people are so removed from proper notions of tefilah and fundamentals of yahadut, that one cannot even have a reasonable discussion with them. It is important to note that this mentality goes well beyond any halachic position which might allow one to visit a grave for inspiration, or to facilitate a commitment to tshuvah. It even goes beyond the problematic issue of a meilitz yosher (intercessor). This jumps right into the biblical prohibition of consulting the dead (Deuteronomy 18:11). You will recall that Maimonides prohibits even appropriate manifestations of prayer in a cemetery (Avelus 14:13), and other Rishonim agreed with him. Clearly, the dangers of praying in such an environment, even for a sophisticated individual who has no interest in communing with the dead, are too real to subject oneself to this psychological pitfall. Certainly, the pilgrimage to Uman does not even fit the criteria for appropriate prayer, since it is clearly directed to the deceased.

Unfortunately, it is not only die-hards who make the trek to Uman. Many non-Breslovers also make the trip, if not on Rosh Hashanah, then on some other occasion during the year. They come to Uman to revel in what they hope will be a spiritually liberating environment. Inevitably they will dance like deranged marionettes with thousands who have also forsaken rationality for magic. They will try to experience an otherworldly experience that has nothing to do with Halachic Judaism and has much more in common with an aboriginal dance. For too many Jews, Uman has become a kind of “Burning Man” festival.

Leaving Eretz Yisroel
For those who live in Israel there is the real Halachic problem relating to the permissibility of leaving Eretz Yisroel. While there are specific allowances for which the Halacha permits one to leave Eretz Yisroel, (parnasa, finding a marriage partner, Torah study, etc.) going to the grave in Uman for Rosh Hashanah is not one of them. No non-Breslov Rav would ever permit this.

A Jewish Home
On top of these very problematic halachic points, these people are so fundamentally detached from reality they don’t even consider the effect on their family life.
• These men abandon their families on the chag!: The bedrock of a normal Torah home is the ideal setting of a loving home headed by a caring mother and father. To leave one’s wife and children on the chagim is beyond sick. It disregards the mesora and its perpetuation, betrays an infantile ignorance of the stability that is essential to a Jewish home, and exhibits a lack of sensitivity to one’s wife and children, all on the altar of magic and mysticism. Many wives support their husbands since they also believe that visiting the grave of Rebbe Nachman will guarantee them a good year. What happened to Hakadosh Baruch Hu? Not good enough?

While Rosh Hashanah in Uman is exclusively for men, there are special trips just for women during the year. It has now become a “thing” that Breslov women can also partake. Unscrupulous “religious” Jews are raking in the dough because they have created an “industry” which can pull in the shekels throughout the year. The possibilities are only limited by their imaginations. Here again we have the vultures who prey on the vulnerable and profit from it.

This is not Judaism. The cult of Uman has much more in common with the “Mary-ology” of devout Catholics who believe in the worship of shrines, icons, relics, and saints, with the fervency of a hoodoo/voodoo practitioner. They have designated forbidden conduits to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. I have not even touched on the issue of the physical dangers of visiting Uman, both on a larger regional scale, and the dangers of local anti-Semites who have a history from the not too distant past of butchering Jews. In recent years, at least one Jew was killed by a gentile, and I recall reading more recently about a Jew in Uman who was severely beaten.

Then there is the issue of chillul Hashem that this pilgrimage creates, as it presents a distorted image of religious Jewry to the world. While many of these pilgrims are mentslich people who mind their own business and behave like humans, there are untold numbers of lunatics who create a tremendous chillul Hashem with their deviant, wild, behavior. Some of this behavior is outwardly profane and doesn’t even mask itself with the cloak of Torah.
For many years there were few proper accommodations, so Ukrainian goyim would rent out their apartments, houses, and haylofts to Jews for ridiculous sums. Other primitive arrangements were also available. The gentiles were surely amused at the irony, when you consider that some of their fathers and grandfathers probably killed Jews. Most Jewish pilgrims are still reliant on the cheapest accommodations.

Yet for those with a bigger budget, today there is Inn Uman, a comfortable modern setting with glatt kosher food, mikveh (only for guests!), shiurim, 24 hour security (why?), and comfy accommodations. I don’t know what is more tragic, the insanity of those whose distorted religious worldview compels them to subject themselves to uncomfortable accommodations from possibly dangerous gentiles, or the mentality of those who have created glatt kosher leisure resorts in rural Ukraine.

As I see it, the contemporary Breslov movement offers nothing to the thinking Jew, save a host of spiritually dangerous notions which oppose fundamentals of Torah. It is an ideology of concepts both foreign and forbidden. At the core, they worship and venerate a dead Rebbe. I am not only speaking about the “Nah, Nachs,” but even mainstream followers who fixate on superstition, demonology, segulos, peculiar diets to prevent lewd thoughts, perverse views of “purity and holiness” (based on sexual/aggressive frustration), and bizarre tikkunim. I invite the reader to take even a cursory perusal of the literature to confirm what I am writing.

Some of the material that is propagated by certain mainstream “leaders” of the movement are obscene beyond description, and the decision was easy to not include it in the article. Several years back, a mainstream Breslov personality was disseminating a video about a ba’al tshuvah who had an alleged “near death experience.” Nebach, the guy clearly had (and probably still has) severe psychological problems. The purported visions he describes during his alleged “religious experience” are pornographic and frightening, and they betray a diseased mind. This was circulated across the web, in an attempt to terrify Jews who might be involved in sexual sin to do tshuvah. Now while it is certainly meritorious to try to convince Jews to sanctify their lives and refrain from improper behavior, proper tshuvah requires a rational understanding and proper presentation of the Halachic system to the uninformed. Trying to frighten people with mythical tales of demonic visitations, evil changelings that are the offspring of forbidden sexual behavior, and other goyish nonsense, has no place in yahadut.

The worst expression is the pagan lure of the Na Nach movement. It is growing more popular in Israel, as the followers prey on Israel’s disconnected and disaffected youth. The Na Nachs are particularly attractive to those drawn to alternative experiences, with their outlandish displays of whirling and twirling in the streets like dervishes, or pogo-ing on the rooftops of vans as if they were attending a punk rock concert. The message needs to go out to the entire Jewish and non-Jewish world that this is not Judaism. This is repression and frustration exploding outwardly in the absence of a kosher outlet. Unfortunately, many naive Israelis religious and otherwise don’t really see the problem. They think it is harmless unless of course they actively dislike religious Jews and choose to see these oddities as a genuine symbol of frumkeit and religious fanaticism.

Whenever I see these misguided Jews dancing in the streets, I think of the mass dancing frenzies that spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. The bizarre Saint Vitus’ dance, where thousands of hysterical x-ians took to the streets and danced themselves to the mental asylum, while shouting profanities to the heavens, all in the name of religious fervor. Yet at the root of their dancing was fear and anxiety: fear of the Black Death; fear of the clergy and of witches; terror that the Jews might poison their wells; or steal their children for matzo. In short, they were spiritually and mentally diseased people. The manic dancing of these Breslovers is not an expression of “serving Hashem with joy,” as some would have it. It is an outlet for those with psychological problems to vent their frustration. The problem is that madness in the name of religion doesn’t kasher the illness. It simply hides it. Uman is actually a symptom of a greater problem that is particularly prevalent in Israel, where the search for the sacred often leads to the profane.

The power of any popular movements devoid of Torah thought is the same with every movement that encourages the abandonment of the rational mind for an artifice of joy. They present easy solutions to complex issues that cannot be resolved by any guru or text. Chants and mantras are the life blood of all cults, be they “Jewish” or otherwise. Only a commitment to true Torah ideals and halacha can give a Torah person clarity. And the perfection of the Jewish soul sometimes necessitates the skills of a psychologist. The time of the Uman pilgrimage is upon us, and we dare not ignore the opportunity to highlight the danger. Presumably, a great many tickets have already been bought. Yet the annual spectacle should be a time to condemn it as un-Jewish activity. Rabbonim should raise their collective voice and state unequivocally that for a host of reasons (and they should elaborate on all of them), it is improper to travel to Uman.

Rabbinical Opposition
Over the years certain Rabbis have come out against this practice, though not nearly enough. An Arutz Sheva news brief from 2010, “Zionist Rabbis Against Uman On Rosh Hashannah” noted a survey of leading Zionistic Rabbonim who opposed the trip to Uman. The list of notable names included the following distinguished Rabbis: Eliyahu Zini, Yakov Ariel, Dov Lior, Uri Sharky, Shlomo Aviner. Rabbi Zini’s response is particularly memorable: “Whoever leaves the holiness of the Land of Israel for the defilement of exile, it is unclear whether he does not believe in the Torah, or is just mentally ill or maybe just unlearned …I have no doubt that Rabbi Nachman, if he were alive today, would be vehemently opposed to this. It is likely that most of the innocent passengers do not know they are wrong. Visiting our holy city of Jerusalem or the Tomb of the Patriarchs is a thousand times more important.” Other Rabbonim that have also opposed the trip in recent years include Rav Ovadiah Yosef, zt’l, and Rav Bar-Chaim of Machon Shiloh.

Earlier this year, Arutz Sheva reported that the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill which would charge Chasidim a $100 dollar fee for a day’s visit to the shrine. Naturally, many Breslover Chasidim were furious with this gentile imposed “Uman tax.” Hopefully, the additional financial burden will discourage Jews from heading into rural Ukraine, rather than fighting a holy war over their right to do so. So I implore my fellow Jews of Israel and the diaspora: This Rosh Hashanah, stay home with your families. Daven to the Ribono Shel Olam like a proper Jew, and not to the grave of any man, regardless of his merits. Understand that Hakadosh Baruch Hu alone is where we are permitted to direct our tefilot, and He alone is the source of repentance. As the classic piyut informs us, the formula is readily available for those who wish to change: “U’Tshuvah, U’Tefilah, U’Tzadakah Ma’avirin Et Ro’ah Ha’Gzeirah.”

The formula for true repentance (tshuvah g’mura) has never changed. As I’ve stated before, we have no need for all this nonsense. We have the ability to turn directly to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. For me, this is the time of the year to immerse myself in the Rambam’s Hilchot Tshuvah, and Rav Soloveitchik’s fascinating collection of essays, “Al Ha’tshuvah” (On Repentance). I find that these two works present a comprehensive framework for understanding and undertaking the process of repentance.

And as far as Ukraine goes, a Jew belongs in Uman the same way that he belongs in the Islamic country of Oman. Stay away from the impure blood stained soil of Ukraine, or any region in accursed Europe for that matter. Eretz Yisroel is the only soil on earth worthy of being kissed.

May Hakadosh Baruch Hu inscribe Am Yisroel and all righteous gentiles into the book of life this year.

Mistreating Men, Trusting Man: Impediments To True Repentance

Elul is upon us, and with it comes the requisite obligation to engage in the process of “teshuva gemura, the highest most comprehensive form of repentance. In this period of the coming Yomim Noraim (“High Holidays”) the severe and somber concept of Divine judgment is fused with the joy afforded us by this unique opportunity. It is the season for the most efficacious form of personal and national repentance, and we Jews have supreme confidence that we can obtain it.

The ability of man to spiritually elevate himself has its price: the ever present potential for spiritual degradation. Unlike the animals who are expressions of instinct, man can degrade himself to a status lower than an animal whose life is dictated by biology. Sin is a reality, and Judaism has a specific formula for avoiding it, including the mechanisms of preventing sin, and the opportunity to return from it.

Judaism has an essentially positive approach to man’s spiritual development. The fundamental belief that given a proper healthy nurturing environment, a life of Halacha will articulate the best in man, while restraining and containing the negative. At its core, Judaism rejects the deterministic outlook of another faith system which deems man sinful from birth. Christianity is premised on the negative belief that man cannot perfect himself, and the solution proposed was contrary to everything that Judaism believes in, including the most fundamental beliefs relating to the one true Creator, Hashem. Idolatry became the mechanism for repentance. Like the former, Islam also rejects personal perfection, and instead glorifies the attribute of subjugation, cruelty, and coercion. Subjugation via the sword negates the basic Jewish tenet of free will.

The correct system of repentance is contingent upon one’s personal belief in the overall system which encompasses biblical and rabbinic prohibitions and positive injunctions. A breakdown of commandments relating to man and The Almighty, and those between man and man.
I would like to share a few thoughts on the latter category, since there is a tendency for many to define their religiosity with actions relating to our Maker, while sometimes neglecting issues related to man. The Almighty is all merciful and in many ways teshuva with our Creator is an easier process than the tedious task of repairing a wrong with one’s fellow man.

Man vs. Man
“Ahavas Yisroel, jackass!” The words I hollered at a Jewish driver some 17 years ago, when this allegedly religious miscreant nearly ran me over with his station wagon. Evidently, he wanted to arrive in shul before borchu to pray maariv (the evening prayer service). The absurd irony of a man who would run over someone to pray to G-d! This episode, though humorous now, conveys for me a prime example of this fundamental problem, when man’s obsession with matters between man and G-d, comes at the expense of normal relations with other people. I see this as a tragically dominant phenomenon in many circles, where people place extraordinary emphasis on ritualistic matters of man and G-d, while sometimes neglecting and abrogating those mitzvoth relating “bain adam la’chaveiro,” between man and man.

A Torah life. Here we have a semantic and a label that all too often is misapplied. Identifying with and accepting the divinity of Torah is surely one way of defining who is religious, particularly when the individual subscribes to the “big three.” Yet if one’s flawed behavior is manifest to the public, in the form of theft/dishonesty, cruelty to others, aggression can one be truly deemed “frum”? Can an obsessive adherence to matters between man and G-d while simultaneously abusing and mistreating his fellow Jew be a truly religious person?

I am not Heaven forbid discouraging or minimizing the importance of fulfilling those mitzvoth relating to matters between G-d and man. I am stating that a fixation with the former sometimes results in undermining those issues relating to man and his fellow man, which by its very definition, expose the fact that one is greatly lacking in all matters of observance, including those with his beloved Creator.

Flawed Figures: Reflections on Disgraced Torah Leaders
The most tragic examples of this tendency are found when people representing Torah betray the system, since while man sometimes has the tendency to mistreat his fellow man, he has the ironic tendency to sometimes idolize specific men. In such instances, the chillul Hashem is even greater, since the damage to the Jewish community irreparable. The system is ruptured when men who are supposed to lead, teach, and embody Torah fall on their faces before our eyes. Ironically, even as we sometimes sacrifice our obligations to our fellow men, the tendency to elevate individual men to such high standards allows for the potential for devastation when they betray the system.

It matters not whether these religious men are “our rabbis.” While the greatest examples of this can sometimes be seen in the popular cult of the “tsaddik” who is sometimes the antithesis of the true man of Torah, the individuals needn’t rise to this level of worship. To the extent that they represent some faction of Torah based Jewry, the damage affects us all, when the Torah is disgraced in front of the world.

All too often today, we read horrific stories where purported men of Torah took advantage of vulnerable people and preyed upon them sexually. From a psychological perspective, it is only natural for the victims of abuse, (and abuse manifests itself in many ways), to abandon Judaism after a negative experience, particularly when they believe that there were other parties involved that enabled the abuse. It’s sad to see people lose faith in Torah. Yet too often Judaism is judged by the practitioner rather than the system. The inherent dangers to the system are manifest when this becomes the anchor for one’s faith. And it’s not only the extreme case of sexual abuse which tests men. Lesser offenses also present Torah as a flawed system, though the desire to see it as such is naturally based upon emotional reactions and betrayed expectations, rather than the perfect rational system of Torah itself.

Several months back, we had the chillul Hashem of a prominent American rabbi, who was found guilty of a crime of moral perversion. Fortunately, the disgraced sexual “rodef” was convicted and sentenced to six years in jail, which although a ridiculously inadequate punishment, will hopefully keep him away from people for many years. And prison is no cake-walk for sex offenders, so the opportunities for additional punishments in prison certainly exist.  Here was a man heading a prestigious Washington synagogue, a scholar in Torah, an academic, a supposed voice of moral reason. He sat on prominent rabbinical boards in high positions. And nevertheless, he undid himself after what must have been a protracted period of idealization of sin followed by comprehensive steps to actualize his thoughts. His actions required extensive research and planning which included but was surely not limited to the following:
  • Indulging and engaging in the kinds of dark sexual fantasies whose articulation jeopardized his spiritual integrity, personal reputation, personal standing (not to mention the image of Orthodox Judaism as a whole), and personal freedom.
  • Making a concrete decision to actualize these thoughts in deed. Researching the kinds of cameras that could be covertly placed in the women’s mikvah, actually purchasing the model and mastering this usage.
  • The final nail in his coffin: installing it. Maintaining his addiction by maintaining the device. Downloading the videos. Allowing it to remain affixed in the mikvah.
Throughout this entire process, one would think that a flawed but G-d fearing person suffering from such a sexual addiction would have time to find some outlet, possibly serious therapy and counseling, to redirect his energies. A certain Gemara comes to mind where it is deemed preferable to sin away from one’s domain in the confines of anonymity. Here we have an intelligent man endangering everything in his life for the pursuit of sexual fantasy. There are two dangers when reacting to this incident:
  •  Failure to learn from this negative spectacle.
  • Drawing the wrong conclusions.
Both are likely possibilities. Religious Judaism has had enough sexual scandals in recent years that came to the public eye and no groups are free of this shame. In many instances, the abusers were enabled both willingly and unwillingly by those who apologized, looked away, and often ignored what was before them. I want to reiterate that from the chareidi world to those in the “modern-orthodox world”, no group can say that they have clean hands. The historical account can attest to this.

And then there are the asinine conclusions of those who don’t understand Torah. The shrill voices of those not personally affected who insist that Judaism needs to change to adapt to this and other incidents. Judaism needs to change? Of course change is needed! Every person, organization who could have prevented such incidents betray this fact! Yet, the Divine system of Torah is perfect, and requires no changing, despite the sentiments of too many who clamber onto the wagon which demands that “orthodox Judaism” needs to evolve. The hysterical reactions of those who view spiritually depraved evil people as representing the system need to reassess their thought process. If change is needed, it is in the practice of Judaism which have become corrupted and politicized. The morality of Torah is perfect. Man is not. And some men are more imperfect than others. Some desecrate G-d’s name while wearing the cloak of the religious G-d man.

The warning signs are usually there. And by warnings, I mean red flags of strange behavior that may not even be motivated by abusive motives but by a distorted dysfunctional personality. It requires a discerning eye and some seichel. Sometimes it boils down to a hunch. A gut feeling that something is amiss. The sense that a rabbi shouldn’t be acting this way.

Several years back, while attending a bat mitzvah in a “modern-orthodox” circle with my wife, we witnessed a peculiar spectacle which led me to opine certain sentiments. The bat mitzvah girl’s “rebbe” was jumping rope with his class of pre-pubescent girls. It was undignified and perverse, yet in this “open” environment no one seemed to notice or think something amiss. Let’s avoid the most blatant halachic issues that come to mind which certainly forbid/discourage such behavior. Even if one could interpret the actual context in a way that didn’t involve prohibitions, one’s internal hunch screams (the hashkafa bone if you will) that something is terribly inappropriate. No normal religious man (rabbi or otherwise) would ever place himself in such a position. A sane cogent man would not want the public to even have a “haavah aminah” that something not so kosher was transpiring. I’m not accusing this man of any sexual indiscretion, G-d forbid. But we have seen too many examples of such close-knit “kiruv encounters” over the years, have we not?

So my second point is this. We need to celebrate the perfect system of Torah, and be wary when it comes to idealizing or idolizing man or men, all the while rejecting the equally un-Jewish notion that man is essentially evil and flawed. Certainly we should honor and revere and seek to emulate true men of Torah, who in the vast majority of cases will not disappoint us. We should make for ourselves a “rav” as instructed by chazal in “The Ethics of The Forefathers.” Yet we should internalize the words of Rav Soloveitchik of blessed memory who noted the following:

“We may trust man, have confidence in him, but we may not have faith in him. Faith connotes absoluteness and no man is worthy of absolute faith. Faith is only applicable to G-d.” (Reflections of the Rav, Abraham R. Besdin, pg. 67)

With these ideas entrenched, we are in a position to truly rehabilitate ourselves and the dysfunctional aspects of contemporary Jewish life, which rupture the ideal Torah system and bring man to sin. And the teshuva process itself becomes grounded in real things, true perfection, and not the trappings of “popular” teshuva which is sometimes monolithic in scope and simple-minded in its articulation.

For a truly comprehensive treatment of issues pertaining to repentance, I suggest people study the Rambam’s “Hilchot Teshuvah” in the Mishneh Torah, and Rav Soloveitchik’s classic work, “Al Ha’teshuvah” (On Repentance, available in English and Hebrew) which represents a treasure trove of gems discussing every nuance of the subject. In my humble opinion, as one who merely benefited from this gadol through his writings, I firmly believe that the “Rav’s” legacy of Torah on the process of teshuva are unparalleled in history.

May Hakadosh Baruch Hu grant us the wisdom to discern His truth, the strength to pursue it, and the fortitude to spread His Torah message to the entire world, both Jew and gentile.  And may we all engage in a process of genuine “complete teshuva” to hasten the coming of the true Moshiach.
